Third in our focus of WPS: Quinsigamond School
Architects: Barker & Nourse
Bldg. 1 1890; 1896
Bldg, 2 1899
Building 1: The original portion was constructed in 1890 and was a simply ornamented 2-story school hour with two room son each floor. The structure was executed in brick with granite trim. The front section facing Millbury Street was added in 1896 which created a 2 1/2 story T-plan. The entrance has a heavy classical porch with columns.
Building 2: is a 3-story building, also with classical elements. Overcrowding became an issue due to the large number of immigrants coming to Quinsigamond Village in the late 19th-century, which is why additions were constructed in quick succession. Quinsigamond School is still functioning as a school Rather than demolish the older school and the Carnegie library (next door), they were joined by a modern addition.
You might remember, Barker & Nourse were the same architects who designed English High on Irving Street. #worcester #architecture #history #schools
