Shoutout to the best shop dog ever on #nationalpuppyday ! Believe it or not, Minka was the catalyst that pushed me to start The Wild Pine. 🌲
Isaac & I had always wanted a puppy, but with both of us working full time, we could never commit, let alone even see each other. We were stuck in an unsustainable rut, unhappy with our jobs & living situation- in desperate need of a change. When one of Isaac’s coworkers’ dogs had puppies, she reached out saying our adventurous selves would perfect husky parents. We made we made the mistake of visiting the litter. A sweet little puppy with 2 different colored eyes wouldn’t leave us alone.... still, we regretfully declined as our apartment wouldn’t even allow dogs.
Fast forward a few weeks, I found a sweet apartment that was just a hop skip & a jump from our work. We gasped at the cheap rent, super short commute, & access to a big forests. But- the ad had a clause saying “only small dogs allowed.” I called the landlord, with that sweet puppy in the back of my mind. “So, about the dog clause- would you perhaps consider a smallish...husky?!” I held my breath as the line went silent. He finally responded: “You know what, huskies are great- why not?” I practically yelled “WE’LL TAKE IT!” I hung up the phone & immediately rung our friend- “Any puppies left??” she responded, “Only one’s left- the one with the two colored eyes!” 🌲
I’ve always wanted to be an artist entrepreneur, but struggled to choose a medium. After moving, I decided on a whim to take a metalsmithing class at a local studio to unwind after work. I came back from that first class buzzing, and I knew. THIS was the craft for me. But fear held me back- Could I really make this into a business? What if I failed? How could I, the consummate extrovert, work alone day in and day out? Isaac patiently listened to my worries, saying, “After all we’d hoped for all these years came together so seamlessly, why can’t your ultimate dream also?! & let’s be real, Minka’ll be the perfect coworker.” A few days later I took the plunge & gave my 2 weeks. I set up my tiny studio in our 5x8 ft sunroom, & proceeded to teach myself to smith, Minka curled at my feet.
