Touching Liberty: I worked with a quarter horse named Liberty today at Horse Link, a nonprofit holding space for retired horses to meet with people for energy work. I didn’t know what to expect in this format and I experienced the unexpected through subtle interaction with a horse I was most attracted to out of the three mares. My first feeling when I saw this smaller, muscular framed horse - black with a soft white blotchy forehead - was playful joy, and I imagined the cosmic star dust of a nebula. When I officially met her, I learned she was the only quarter horse, abandoned by her owners and rescued to find purpose at Horse Link. She is known to be shy and doesn’t like being gazed at. Obviously I felt tenderly in approaching her, knowing her story. We met, I offered my fist for her to smell (horse introductions) and I could feel her warmth immediately within my chest. I stroked her neck and remained in a sleepy kind of relaxation - making sure my breathing intervals were long and slow, not withholding. Then, like a swell of perfect waves, emotions consumed me and I had to gently step back to give us some space, and released - fuck it, cried with witnesses. Centered myself in the heat, Liberty licking her snout, teething, and breathing, her eye on me, and we relaxed once again. I wasn’t sure where to go from here until she began stomping her hoof and playing with her harness, still looking at me. So, I leaned back into my breathing and stepped back into the center of our heat, caressed her neck, and thanked her.
