Today in Women’s History Month: “Those of us who stand outside the circle of this society's definition of acceptable women; those of us who have been forged in the crucibles of difference – those of us who are poor, who are lesbians, who are Black, who are older – know that survival is not an academic skill. It is learning how to take our differences and make them strengths.” — Audre Lorde

Audre Lorde, born in New York City to West Indian immigrant parents, published her first poem in Seventeen magazine while still in high school. As a poet, she is best known for her technical mastery and emotional expression. Self-described as “Black, lesbian, mother, warrior, poet,” Audre Lorde dedicated both her life and her creative talent to activism, confronting the injustices of racism, sexism, classism, and homophobia she observed and experienced.

Audre Lorde’s work spanned poetry, prose, and film and she was a founding member of Sisters in Support of Sisters in South Africa, an organization that worked to raise concerns about women under apartheid.

Lorde died of liver cancer in 1992, in St. Croix. In an African naming ceremony before her death, she took the name Gamba Adisa, which means "Warrior: She Who Makes Her Meaning Known”. #blacklivesmatter #womenshistorymonth #audrelorde

"Los padres blandos nos dijeron "pienso, luego existo". La madre negra que todas llevamos dentro, la poeta, nos susurra en nuestros sueños: "siento, luego puedo ser libre". La poesía acuña el lenguaje con el que expresar e impulsar esta exigencia revolucionaria, la puesta en practica de la libertad." La Poesia no es un Lujo, Audre Lorde

"I am not free while any woman is unfree, even when her shackles are very different from my own” - I think of this quote from Audre Lorde often. She’s one of my favorite poets, and this is a sentiment I’ve had trouble putting into words. A lot of feminism- of all activism for that matter- is not about the self the self’s experiences, or even those similar to your own. It’s about listening and understanding other women, and believing women’s ability to tell their own stories. It’s something we can all stand to improve. 💜 .

“Once we begin to feel deeply all the aspects of our lives, we begin to demand from ourselves and from our life-pursuits that they feel in accordance with that joy which we know ourselves to be capable of. Our erotic knowledge empowers us, becomes a lens through which we scrutinize all aspects of our existence, forcing us to evaluate those aspects honestly in terms of their relative meaning within our lives. . . .” #audrelorde

Our #wcw is ✨all women everywhere, all day, every day,✨ and we’ll keep proclaiming it long after March is over, but since Women’s History Month is still going strong, we’ll shout it now too. 🗣 Want to read more women this month (and in general)? Stop by and ask our booksellers for some recommendations—we’d love to help. Go ahead and leave your favorites in the comments as well, and we’ll all celebrate women together, in the best way we know how.

Self-care is never a selfish act - it is simply good stewardship of the only gift I have, the gift I was put on earth to offer others. Anytime we can listen to true self and give the care it requires, we do it not only for ourselves, but for the many others whose lives we touch. #audrelorde .

20.03 - I am too young for my history 💡🍃⏳ For each of you: be who you are and who you will be. Learn to cherish.. That boisterous Black angel that drives you. Up one day and down another. Protecting the place where your power rises. Running like hot blood. From the same source. As your pain.

When you are hungry. Learn to eat. Whatever sustains you. Until morning. But do not be mislead by details. Simply because you love them.

Do not let you head deny. Your hands. Any memory of what passes through them. Nor your eyes. Nor your heart. Everything can be used. Except what is wasteful. (You will need ... so remember this when you are accused of destruction). Even when they are dangerous. Examine the heart of those machines you hate. Before you discard them. And never mourn the lack of their power. Lest you be condemned. To relieve them. If you do not lear to hate. You will never be lonely. Enough. To love easily. Nor will always be brave. Although it does not grow easier.

Do not pretend to convenient beliefs. Even when they are righteous. You will never be able to defend your city. While shouting.

Remember our sun. Is not the most noteworthy star. Only the nearest.

Respect whatever pain you bring back. From you dreaming. But do not look for new gods. In the sea. Nor any part of a rainbow. Each time you love. Love deeply. As if it were. Forever. Only nothing is. Eternal.

Speak proudly to your children. Where ever you may find them. Tell them. You are the offspring of the slaves. And your mother was. A princess. In darkness.

I am too young for my history.

“When we speak we are afraid our words will not be heard or welcomed. But when we are silent, we are still afraid. So it is better to speak.”⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
~ Audre Lorde⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
We love, love, love this quote. Yes, speaking up os often scary (especially after a lifetime of receiving messages that tell us to do the exact opposite).⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
But voice is one of the most powerful self-defense tools we have. It allows us to set boundaries and limits, de-escalate potentially threating situations, and demand respect.⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Also, it’s very rare that we regret speaking up. It’s NOT speaking up that causes us to look back with regret.⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
We are so grateful to all the women who came before us who used their voices to pave the way for us to lead better, healthier, and safer lives.⠀

Reposted from @blklivesmatter - Today in Women’s History Month: “Those of us who stand outside the circle of this society's definition of acceptable women; those of us who have been forged in the crucibles of difference – those of us who are poor, who are lesbians, who are Black, who are older – know that survival is not an academic skill.

You can't break free from the forces that oppress you by using, or striving to become, those same oppressive forces. True changes comes from reinventing rather than repackaging. Always strive to be better than you were yesterday. What changes will you make for yourself today?

Zami: A New Spelling of My Name by Audre Lorde 🇺🇸: A little black girl opens her eyes in 1930s Harlem. Around her, a heady swirl of passers-by, car horns, kerosene lamps, the stock market falling, fried bananas, tales of her parents' native Grenada. She trudges to public school along snowy sidewalks, and finds she is tongue-tied, legally blind, left behind by her older sisters. On she stumbles through teenage hardships -- suicide, abortion, hunger, a Christmas spent alone -- until she emerges into happiness: an oasis of friendship in Washington Heights, an affair in a dirty factory in Connecticut, and, finally, a journey down to the heat of Mexico, discovering sex, tenderness, and suppers of hot tamales and cold milk. This is Audre Lorde's story. It is a rapturous, life-affirming tale of independence, love, work, strength, sexuality and change, rich with poetry and fierce emotional power.

„Through many reading interventions that I was doing with Bombay Underground, I realized that people were not reading women. Works of women were looked at as a niche category and this troubled me. I looked at my own collection only to find it heavily disproportionate: it had less than 20% female authors. I made a very conscious decision to read women exclusively. This was 5 years back. As the collection grew, so did my desire to share these amazing works with people. That was how the work began.“ Aqui Thami founded the traveling Sister Library, currently hosted by @kochibiennale – I talked to her about the library‘s journey.

AUNTIE: AUDRE LORDE
‘As the first openly queer person in my family, I have never had an elder to turn to for advice about love, life or relationships from a non-heterosexual lens, let alone somebody to speak to about activism and community. Audre Lorde became that person for me, through her work I had questions answered and worries alleviated. I felt comforted. These are some of my favourite quotes from Audre Lorde that I have found myself turning to, time and time again over the years and the lessons I have taken from them…’ Tanya Compas

“The erotic is a measure between the beginning of our sense of self and the chaos of our strongest feelings. It is an internal sense of satisfaction to which, once we have experienced it, we know we can aspire. For having experience the fullness of the steps of feeling and recognizing it’s power, in honor and self respect we can required no less of ourselves.” - #audrelorde #theeroticaspower #pleasureactivism #adriennemareebrown

🌱 ••••• Before I left New York, I met with one of my favorite professors (I have three) and she said to me (paraphrasing): self-care is not necessarily going to eat ice cream or going to spa, or something frivolous, it’s doing something that makes you feel whole, something that contributes to your WHOLENESS.
.
.
.
.
That concept shook me to my core. And now revisiting that thought, I understand the situations that warrant self-care interventions: when we feel incomplete. When we lose ourselves in our day to day, we often seek places of refuge in order to regain a sense of wholeness. Well, that’s probably what we should do. But instead, we stop break for a temporary satisfaction and never exactly return to wholeness. .
.
.
.
Thinking on this, I’m going to practice daily acts of self-care to actively build and maintain my wholeness. I don’t want to run, or hide or break from my day to day. I want my day to day to be radical self-care, self-love and self-preservation.
Not to be confused with setting myself up to be comfortable or content. There will always be growth for sure. But that growth will happen in contribution to my constant WHOLENESS. ✨

#tuba #audrelorde #reading #lelettereedizioni #poesia

Audre Lorde was born on February 18, 1934 – November 17, 1992. She was an American writer, Black feminist, womanist, librarian, and civil rights activist. As a poet, she is best known for technical mastery and emotional expression, as well as her poems that express anger and outrage at civil and social injustices she observed throughout her life. Her poems and prose largely deal with issues related to civil rights, feminism, lesbianism, and the exploration of black female identity. “It is within our differences that we are both most powerful and most vulnerable, and some of the most difficult tasks of our lives are the claiming of differences, and learning to use those differences for bridges rather than as barriers between us.”~Sister Outsider (1984). #audrelorde #womenshistorymonth #blackfeministpost #blackfeminist #feminism #intersectionality #womanist #alloppressionisconnected #feminista #blackwoman #woman #equality #feminismisforeveryone #weshouldallbefeminists #31daysofherstory #womenshistorymonth

Here's the piece I've been working on for weeks for my intro to feminist theories class. It was supposed to focus on a feminist "aha! moment", and for me reading Audre Lorde's letter "The Master's Tools with never dismantle the Master's House" from her book Sister Outsider made a huge impact on me. I thought a lot about how I see that concept in life and in works of media and it made me think about my favorite quote from Rent- "the opposite of war isn't peace, it's creation". It also made me think a lot about the concept of "women's work". If the tools of men are weapons and violence, then what are the tools of women? Traditionally feminine work- sewing, cooking, childcare- these things use tools of creation. A sewing needle is sharp like a sword, but it's used to create things and foster life, rather than to hurt and destroy. #embroidery #sewing #feminism #rent #musicaltheater #feministtheory #audrelorde #sublimestitchingfloss

Pat Parker, born January 20, 1944 was black lesbian feminist poet and activist. She was born in Houston, Texas. She left home at 17 and moved to Los Angeles, California, to attend college. She earned an undergraduate degree at Los Angeles City College and a graduate degree at San Francisco State College. After two marriages, Parker began to identify as a lesbian in the late 1960s.

Parker worked from 1978 to 1988 as the executive director of the Oakland Feminist Women's Health Center. Parker was involved in the Black Panther Movement, in 1979 she toured with the "Varied Voices of Black Women", a group of poets and musicians. Parker participated in many forms of activism especially in/regarding gay and lesbian communities, domestic violence, and rights of people of color.

She addressed these themes in her writing. Her began reading her poems publicly in the early 60s and eventually began to read her poetry to women’s groups, and in coffeehouses and feminist events. Parker and Audre Lorde first met in 1969 and continued to exchange letters and visits until Parker's death in 1989. Their collaboration inspired many, including lesbian-feminist blues/R&B singer Nedra Johnson, whose song "Where Will You Be?" Another famous work of hers is “Womanslaughter” (1978), which she wrote after Parker's elder sister, Shirley Jones, was shot and killed by her husband. The perpetrator was convicted of "womanslaughter", not murder. He served a one-year sentence in a work-release program.[6] Parker brought this crime to the International Tribunal on Crimes against Women in 1976 in Brussels.

Parker died on June 19, 1989, of breast cancer at the age 45 in Oakland, CA. The national lesbian-feminist community mourned her loss. She was survived by her long-time partner, Marty Dunham, and her daughters Cassidy Brown and Anastasia Jean.

This weekend, I listened to @rachel.cargle ’s 3-minute lecture and learned a lot of something about the above quote. ⁣⁣⁣⁣
.⁣⁣⁣⁣
.⁣⁣⁣⁣
When Audrey ‪Lorde‬ made this statement, she was referring to an academic system that did not provide her with basic healthcare yet benefited from her intellectual labor.⁣⁣⁣⁣
.⁣⁣⁣⁣
.⁣⁣⁣⁣
This quote and explanation really resonates with me. It comes during a time in my professional career when my primary goal is to ensure that I am serving my community in a way that truly benefits us and prioritizes our health (because who else will?). Because guess what? Adequate healthcare still isn’t accessible for all. Neither is food security. Neither is clean water. The list goes on.⁣⁣⁣⁣
.⁣⁣⁣⁣
.⁣⁣⁣⁣
I have been passionate about social justice, advocating for healthier food environments, and building genuine relationships for a long time. So recently, I have been thinking a lot about ways to incorporate all these things into the work that I am currently doing.⁣⁣
.⁣⁣
.⁣⁣⁣⁣
Instead of thinking about what I don’t have and where I’m not at (cause that’s what I’ve been doing), I’m making an effort to focus on what I do have to work with. Currently, I have a social media platform and a virtual nutrition practice. The plan, for right now, is to use these to promote self-love, self-care, and self-acceptance as the foundation that our efforts to achieve better health are rooted in. ⁣
.⁣
.⁣
I am so overwhelmed with ideas that I don’t even know where to start #blessing ☝🏾. I just can’t wait to get them all organized outside of my head and onto paper so that I can share them with you ✨. ⁣

And you will lose some friends and lovers, and realize you don't miss them. And new ones will find you and cherish you.....

Local: Cine Santa Tereza.
Rua Estrela do Sul, 89, Santa Tereza, BH.
Entrada gratuita. Venham!! #cultura #audrelorde #negra #lesbica #feminista #feminismonegro #partidamg #democraciafeministaeantirracista

Some Monday motivation: This week, think of the issues you’re most passionate about and how they intersect with those of other people.

👩🏻‍🏫 Recommended reading available on my site 📚 “Sick Woman Theory is for those who are faced with their vulnerability and unbearable fragility, every day, and so have to fight for their experience to be not only honored, but first made visible. For those who, in Audre Lorde’s words, were never meant to survive: because this world was built against their survival. You know who you are, even if you’ve not been attached to a diagnosis: one of the aims of Sick Woman Theory is to resist the notion that one needs to be legitimated by an institution, so that they can try to fix you. ❤️✊🏼You don’t need to be fixed, my queens – it’s the world that needs the fixing.✊🏼❤️” -Johanna Hedva
