Elder flower and berries.
Her leaves and branches smell a lot like cat pee as you brush by, but this can be forgiven in an instant when you taste her gloriously shiny and beaded, black berries and catch a whiff of the light heady aroma of her flowers.
Both her flowers and her berries taste good as wine and cordial too! Usually found in damp, wet soiled areas. I live by old marsh lands and so there's a lot of Elder around me. She grows like wildfire.
It is said that Elder will only grow where there are true witches, I actually have one in my garden that began to grow one day and hasn't left...
Fast grower and known as the regeneration tree due to it's ability to regrow from any part of itself that is in contact with soil, a lot like willow.
Aka the past, present, and future tree.
A protective tree probably due to the black colour and the protective qualities of her berries as medicine.
Elder is especially powerful in wands and it has been known to be made into flutes, as it is hollow in the middle except for a foamy pith which is easily pushed out. These flutes cause music to be more like a spell.
Associated with Venus.
Her berries and flowers are commonly used for
sinus problems, colds, flus and as a diuretic and she can also use her flowers to stop bleeding, Yarrow has a similar action.
Her fresh inner green bark is emollient and this can then be made into a salve or ointment for dry skin.
