Continuation of Toubkal walking up.
The cloud level kicked in as you can see in pic 1.
But thunder started, it was all around us. It hit 5 times & huge thunder at that.
If there's one thing they say is, if there's thunder & lightning get off the mountain quick.
Lightning; an electrical discharge that occurs 'between' clouds or between clouds & the earth. Most often, such discharges hit the nearest, and therefore, the highest places on the ground. That’s why mountain peaks become favorite targets. You're a target. And we were already above cloud level.
That was some massive thunder. Huge. Lightning is 1 million volts at a speed of up to 150 meters per second. It kills more people than any other natural phenomenon; 24,000 a year and 240,000 are injured.
So, the guide made us turn back. Rightly so. It wasn't possible.
I'm still not 100% if to get me to stay at his 'brothers' hotel by checkpoint for the night by his house but he didn't have WiFi so didn't anyway. That's why I've writ all that about lightning, so I can see in writing it was the right thing to do.
Descended but the thunder disappeared, I said let's carry on, but then the thunder kept coming back.
Win some you lose some. It just wasn't meant to be.
Looking at the map after, I can't believe how close we were to charamouch though, there was shelter & a hotel there too. Maybe 3/4 of a mile. May have been full tho anyway.
Fine we couldn't make refuge but it may have dispersed and we may have been able to carry on. Was it worth the risk?
Anyway, I got half way to the refuge.
The season doesn't start till 1st April & with this being 26/3 i was always going to need some luck with the weather, & I didn't get it. Gutted.
But, saved £234 not doing it. That refuge was proper expensive being only option to sleep up the mountain.
I reckon I climbed 700m ish.
3207m refuge - 1688m imlil starting point =1519 / 2 (charamouche being half way) = 760m. Take a bit off coz was 3/4 mile from charamouche. About 700m.
Needs to be done later in year, some weather makes you fail 😩 but worked out if I start at bottom of imlil I can climb 2500m in a day, it'll kill me, but something to train for, I'll be back.
