Mercedes-Benz (1+1a) – The Pagoda ⛩⛩⛩
(1966, Mercedes-Benz 230 SL aka the “Pagoda” ... The short story – extracts:
I love the Mercedes-Benz W113 Series ... which is probably best known by its nickname ☺️
It got its nickname due to its very distinctive design, mainly by Paul Bracq, with the “hard top” which had quite special “curvy” lines, which gave associations to an oriental pagoda … it became this model’s stylistic “benchmark” … and right from the beginning it became known by its nickname: The “Pagoda”.
Apropos “curvy” … though in a bit different way …😅
I remember a scene in the “retro” film “Arabesque” (from 1966, as the Pagoda in my photos) where Gregory Peck and the wonderful … and pretty “curvy” … Italian actress, Sophia Loren, were “on the run” in a wild car chase in an eye-catching red Mercedes 230 SL Pagoda ... uhhhh nice scene, which has become a cult scene (it can be found on the internet/Youtube, I am sure)🤘See it if you haven’t seen it yet and if you like the Pagoda – AND like Sophia Loren too (by the way, she actually loved Mercedes “in private” as well – she had good taste) 😉👍😁
And now ... since I already have put a little “female touch” into this intro, then I’ll also mention another one ☺️ I remember I once read, that a car enthusiast compared the Pagoda with “the little black dress” 😅 And even though I’m not a woman, who very often wears a dress, then I do it now and then ... and one thing I actually do have, is “the little black dress”, which most women – and probably (at least) some men as well – either have or at least know “the concept” of (though, not many men would actually be the owners of one, but they might know “the concept” 😉): It’s a dress, that would never go out of style, nor would it ever find a social occasion where it would be out of place ... and I actually think, that the comparison with “the little black dress” and the MB Pagoda (no matter what colour the Pagoda is in; it’s the conceptual metaphor that counts 😉) is okay, since the Pagoda IMHO also is 100% timeless and fits in – anytime and anywhere 🖤⭐️🖤
Disclaimer: I can’t guarantee the originality of the car in the photos I’ve taken).
