A quick example here, I had a client yesterday who was weighing in a little higher than usual this week, which made her somewhat discouraged. She understands how weight fluctuates, but it still can be frustrating nevertheless when you feel that you've done everything right. We recapped her previous week and concluded that:

1๏ธโƒฃ She was very sore from her workouts that week, which can cause water retention to repair damaged muscle tissue. 2๏ธโƒฃ She was out late multiple nights that week, getting less sleep than usual and sleeping at a different time than usual. 3๏ธโƒฃ She had a couple drinks the night before which could cause dehydration/fluid retention.

All of these more than explain why the scale went up. I'm not saying you can make some excuse every time the scale doesnโ€™t read what you want it to read, but you do need to be able to take a step back and access that information objectively.

Here are some other factors that can influence that number:

๐Ÿšฐ Water & Sodium Intake: Increased sodium intake can cause water retention, leading to a higher than usual weight. Water intake can be influenced by many thingsโ€ฆmaybe it's a hot day & you sweat quite a bit, causing you to drink much more water than you typically do.

๐Ÿ’Š Medication: Things like anti-inflammatory drugs (ibuprofen) may cause fluid retention as well.

๐Ÿ” Digestion: Eating larger amounts of fiber can cause you to retain a little bit more water, also affecting the scale.

๐Ÿž Glycogen Stores: The more glycogen in your muscles (stored carbs), the more water your body will retain. This is why the Keto Diet leads to a big initial drop in weightโ€ฆthose glycogen stores get wiped out.

Keep in mind, these are only a couple of factors that affect scale weight readings. There are definitely a few others as well.
