I present to you Blood Orange aka @devhynes aka Lightspeed Champion. If you don’t know him already from his widely acclaimed album, Negro Swan, then you’re surely missing out.
Negro Swan 🦢 charts as a top 2 album for me in 2018. Top 10 ever. Although I didn’t even listen until months after it’s release, when I did listen, it was all in one sitting...loud, high, and in my car. I wasn’t expecting to sit there that long, however the sound of this record had me so intrigued since the first song, Orlando. I went on an emotional spin with each song. This album gives elements of R&B, funk, soul, classical, and so much more. Yet the chords and instrumentals (all produced by Blood Orange himself) are so minimal. Enough to where it feels as if this album is a breathing, living piece of art. We get themes of self-confidence, vulnerability, and free expression. With beautiful poetry-like lyrics that are catchy as hell.
After that night I’ve been hooked on Blood Orange ever since man. I wish I could experience it all over again. I’m just glad I got to attend a live show, the live instrumentation is amazing. The man is a musical genius. Give Negro Swan a listen if you’d like to enjoy a real masterpiece.
