At around 8:45am, Easter Sunday, explosions erupted throughout three cities of Sri Lanka. Churches and hotels were mainly targeted out of the eight bombings that occurred. These bombings took place at the Zion Church of Batticaloa, St. Sebastian’s Church of Negombo, with six locations in Colombo, including St. Anthony’s Shrine, Kingsbury Hotel, Shangri-La Hotel, Cinnamon Grand Hotel, a complex near the Dehiwala Zoo, and three police killed raiding apartments in Eastern Colombo. So far, 207 deaths have been recorded, with 450 injured. Of the dead, 35 are foreigners to Sri Lanka, including American, British, Chinese, Dutch, and Portuguese citizens. It has been suspected that the Radical Islamic Group, known as National Thowheeth Jama’ath, is behind the bombings, but it is not known for sure. Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe reported that law enforcement apparently had knowledge of these attacks ten days beforehand, with the warning that “prominent churches” would be bombed. Most of the attacks were committed by suicide bombers, and it is confirmed that they were all acting under a larger group, considering how coordinated the attacks were. Thirteen suspects have been arrested with relation to the attack, with at least eight being Sri Lankan. The Sri Lankan Government has launched a temporary ban on many social media apps, including Facebook, Instagram, Snapchat, WhatsApp and Viber, to prevent “wrong information” from spreading. Nationwide curfews have also been emplaced to deter terror activity at night. Christians only account for 5% of the Sri Lankan Population, and they have never been targeted in a major attack before. This is the worst attack that has occurred in The Democratic Socialist Republic of Sri Lanka since their Civil War from 1983-2019, which was fought between their government and secessionists in the north.
