Oh! Enlightened one,
Saraswati Pujo is one of the most important and most elaborately celebrated festive ritual in Kolkata, after Durga Puja and Diwali.
It is important mostly for the students as Saraswati, according Hindu mythology is the deity of knowledge and art.
She is usually portrayed as a beautiful lady with a Bina in hand accompanied by a swan.
In this picture the goddess is a small stone like structure on which the light falls.
Kolkata is known as city of joy and celebration and we take this title quite seriously. There is barely any festivities we miss celebrating. Saraswati Puja has been a part of our culture and practice, not just because of its spiritual significance but more because of the sentiment of people around this festival. It is celebrated in schools and colleges and all other educational institutions though out the city. Students come together to arrange and decorate the idols, the 'pandals' and cook together for everyone. This togetherness, this enjoyment is what makes this short festival of one day worth every moment.
Trivia: This day was once know as the Valentine's day of Calcuttans
