3 1/2 years ago, I decided to do something new and took my very first karate class. My son had been taking the same class for almost a year, so I decided to join as a way to spend time with him.
Fast forward to today. My son no longer practices karate, but I do. Every Saturday morning, I summon my inner Bruce Lee and proceed to kick, punch, kata and spar my heart out.
I love every minute of it.
I'm constantly trying to recruit new students because I'm convinced that everyone will love karate just as much as I do if they just give it a chance. I do realize that everyone has different interests and likes, but I continue to feed the fantasy.
This morning, as I finished up 30 consecutive, 3 kick combinations (roundhouse, side, hook), I couldn't help but feel excited about how far I'd come since my first class. Sure, I may have been trying to catch my breath to keep from passing out, but still - I was proud of myself.
If I'd never decided to try something new, I never would have discovered my love for this sport. I never would have entered a karate tournament and won a 1st place trophy at 40 years old. I never would have met the wonderful friends I now have because of martial arts.
So, take it from a friend, if you're thinking about trying something new, just do it! You may even discover your own inner Bruce Lee.
Cheers to new things!
Love, Christie. 💙
