Dragons In A Bag by @zettaelliott , narrated by Ron Butler (who sounds SO much like Levar Burton!) is a cute beginning chapter book written with intention to add POC voices to kitlit fantasy!! I mean, what is there not to love about that mission! Jax is an only child, living with his single mom in Brooklyn and they are at risk of being evicted. Jax's mom drops him off at an elderly stranger's house, whom she calls "Ma". Ma is cranky, rude and does NOT want to watch Jax. Unfortunately, Jax's mom Alicia has no one else to leave Jax with while she goes to court to try to stay in their home a little longer. Jax is forced to figure out 1. Who is this Ma?? 2. What is in the mysterious box on the table that keeps making scratching noises...?? You guessed it: dragons. Jax and Ma are both reluctantly sucked into a wild adventure, that takes them traveling through time and realms and they discover that while they are not blood relations, they are kindred spirits. This book was a great way to introduce my 7 year old son to a different life experience than his own, and a great conversation starter for growing empathy and compassion and cultural understanding. My son Elijah and I particularly enjoyed the creative mode of time/realm transport. My son also noticed that the ending really leaves us hanging, and he definitely wants to find out what happens next! I read the physical copy, and then my son and I listened to the audiobook together on my RBdigital app.
