We Found Something
The sun was getting low in the sky and the forest around us turned golden in the late afternoon light. My little brother Leo raced ahead of me darting between trees and jumping over rocks.
“Hey, don’t go too far,” I called after him. “We don’t want to get lost out here.”
Grandpa's farm was a wreck, 100 acres of unkempt land that he let fall apart. He had inherited the farm from his father and, for a time, kept it running until my grandmother died giving birth to my father. He shut down after that and sent my infant father to live with his aunt. I never met the guy or even spoke to him on the phone, not sure if my dad did either.
He died recently and the land went to my father who decided it was somehow a good idea to leave the city and move our family to a farm he never knew. Mom says it’s a new adventure, but I just miss my friends. It’s too quiet out here, especially at night. My little brother has night terrors and without the noise of the city outside my window to drown him out, he wakes me up on a regular basis.
It had been weeks and, despite my Mother's promise of adventure, all we had done was clean out barns and listen to Dad curse at the old neglected tractors. He’s a mechanical engineer, but according to him rusty broken parts won’t work, no matter how smart the operator. I guess he thinks he’s pretty smart, but how smart is taking your kids from the only life they ever knew and slapping them down in the middle of nowhere? This trek into the forest was his idea.
Dad had thought we should go be boys. “Go explore a bit,” he said. “A 15 year old needs to explore. And take your brother with you.”
So there I was traipsing through the trees, hoping I could find our way back when I realized I couldn’t see Leo any more.
“Leo!” I called, “Get back here ya little punk. Don’t make me come looking for you!”
“Billy!” he cried out. “Come here, quick! I found something!”
I shook my head and walked towards the sound of his voice. I called out, “I know there aren't many trees in the city, but trust me you didn’t find anything special!”
