Our culture is teaching us that we can “have it all”.
•birth as something you “bounce” back from,
•motherhood as something you do amidst your beautifully designed, pristine kitchen in your pressed blouse and designer distressed jeans,
•meaningful relationships as “effortless”, and
•success as something that finally happens once you find “your universe orchestrated path” or “your calling”.
But that’s all a lie.
Motherhood is messy, hard and a HUGE sacrifice, you’re forever physically and emotionally changed.
Homes with kids are chaotic (downright unsanitary) and flawed.
Relationships take consistent, daily work, honest conversations, grit and self-sacrifice.
And MOST meaningful accomplishments are the result of years of behind the scenes hustle, sweat, failure and frustration and half the time you’re wondering, “Is this even what I’m supposed to do with my life?”
If you want something out of this life, it’s going to cost you something.
If you want love, then you sure as heck should be prepared to give it and give all that you have.
If you want children, it’s going to take it’s toll on your body in ways that you never would have anticipated.
If you want real, lasting, reliable love, then you better be prepared to put someone else ahead of you, not in a co-dependent, I’m a doormat that can’t stand up for herself kind of way, but in the way that you too want someone else to put you first.
Life is work. Work is hard. Work is a force applied over a distance. Distance means time and travel, years and milestones, wrinkles, grays, stretch marks, weathering, experience, beauty, accomplishment, battles won and lost….
But everything worth having in life is on the other side of us investing and committing ourselves to dreams, to goals, to others.
And I’m grateful for this crew for their patience with my flaws, for Jeremiah’s reciprocated commitment, all the distance we’ve covered thus far and the work we have yet to do!
