Photography has been hijacked. It has been commandeered by this current age of instant gratification and consumerism. We live in a time when this art, and all art, is taken for granted -- a time when the subtle details of creation, both natural and human, go unnoticed amidst the incessant noise of civilization. A time when photography is merely a way to get "cool pics", lifeless 'likes', and hollow 'follows'.
Photo - Graphy, or 'Light-writing' is the freezing of a special moment in time... FOREVER. This moment arrives and it is gone forever. Like sand slipping through one's hands, or an endless river flowing from eternity to eternity.
How did this even come to be? How is it that man, with his reason, intellect, and curiosity, even began to fathom the concept of capturing a moment in time? Perhaps it was a result of the intrinsic desire for God? Or the drive to become immortal?
Compound this with psychology. We are hardwired to respond vividly to imagery. Many of us have memories as far back as the early years of our upbringing. And yet, we now take the creation of images, and the images themselves so lightly?
A lab rat could likely be trained to take pictures.
To effectively capture a moment in time requires more than just the gear. Speaking for myself, I recognize the spiritual implications of moment-capturing. For me, it's a prayer; I enter into a state of docility and let the holy Spirit guide me. The more I shoot, the more I see that I must die to myself for the sake of full immersion in the emotion and the spirit of the moment. •
My point is this — we live in a powerful and exciting time. But with that comes the requirement of extreme consciousness and intentionality. We must question the intent behind our actions — Are we glorifying God by our images? Or are we doing the exact opposite, such as glorifying ourselves?
