“The keyboardist broke into a fast pace ragtime stride. The drummer followed with a rolling crescendo in double time on a large single bass drum that set an upbeat swing on steroids. I was familiar with the sounds of pioneers like James P. Johnson, Jellyroll Morton, Art Tatum and Fats Waller but never in church. To hear church musicians play the melody with the right hand and a stride bass with his left created a sound that made everyone jump, shout and praise the Lord.
