FINDING HER DAILY
Cookey walked back to his desk, a little troubled about the look that Simi’s colleague gave to him. He wondered if she knew about them. Soon enough everyone would know about their secret affair if Simi let it slip to the rest of the office. What would become of him then. Everyone knew about his faith. It had been important to him to make that clear from the very beginning. Doing that had saved him a lot of trouble. Now they would whisper about him. He would finally make the rounds of office gossip.
He sat down long enough to collect his thoughts before picking up his phone again. He thumbed though the messages, struggling with the emotions that they stirred. One read:
“I love you, Cookey. I hope you know that. No matter what you feel about this, that is not going to change.”
He could go no further. He called her then. It rang out without an answer. He dialled again. And again. There was no way he would have peace if he did not find a way to speak with Simi.
An hour later, he could hardly get any work done because his hands quivered over his computer keyboard and his heart rate spiked. Already, a headache was forcing down his temple and a fever was right on its heels. He could not continue at work. He had to see Simi if his life were to move forward.
Cookey was breaking out in sweat by lunchtime and he went to ask permission to head out of the office for the rest of the day. With shaky hands, he drove straight to Simi’s apartment. Simi opened the door after nearly five minutes. Cookey looked with shock at the shadow of the girl that had stirred his passions. Her eyes were sunken and had dark rings around them. She looked to have been in bed for days without a bath. She was bent at the middle and appeared to be in a lot of pain. He felt a surge of revulsion as well as compassion all at once. The latter won.
Cookey reached for her and helped her back into the house before someone could see them. “What happened to you, Simi?” he asked with shaky lips. She gave him a cool, distant look before walking out of his arms.
