Part 2 of my injury series, today: muscle strain (Zerrung).⚡️

1. WHAT IS IT?
A strain usually occurs when you overstretch or tear a muscle. Often it happens when you don’t warm up & start too fast or stretch too excessively. The muscle is stretched out of its natural shape, the tissue can even tear. It causes a sharp pain that should make you stop exercising immediately.💥
.
2. ICE & HEAT
Ice packs right after injury help to reduce blood flow into the area & minimize swelling. Heat packs much later relax the muscle fibres & the help to regenerate quicker. 
You can start with soft stretching after a couple of days to stimulate the blood flow, releasing tension &  prevent the building of scar tissue - but this shouldn’t make the pain worse! Start training again only when you are completely painfree!❄️🔥

1. WHAT IS IT?

Probably a good thing I didn’t realize it was blowing snow quite the way it was when I headed out for my run or I’m not sure I would have. Without the wet snow in my face it would have been a beautiful run with these warmer temps (well... and without the headache that comes to me with any drastic change in weather #lesigh). I kept it short (5k) as my head really is killing me but the legs and lungs felt great and goddamn it was good to be outside! Also I had only 1 dramatic flail on snow-covered ice so we’ll count that as a win 💪.

Currently my favorite greenway( the one pictured) is flooded. 😭😭 I’m ready for the endless amount of rain to end so I can run this route again but today was 5 easy treadmill miles.

This was me 50 days ago when I thought I will give the Run Every Day challenge a go. To be honest I thought I might last 10 days as my fitness was tragic. When I got to 10 days I felt amazing I thought why have I limited myself to such a low standard. It proved a significant moment, a wake up call. Something that I know I will look back to in the coming months as a major stepping stone to where I find myself then. 
I have now completed 50 consecutive days of at least 3.1 Miles (5 Km) I can say without any doubt I am feeling the best I have since I started back running in 2014. I feel I am fitter than when I finished the marathon in 2017 and my base fitness is improving by the week. Who knows where the journey will take me and who will come on it with me. I am very much keeping an openmind to what is going to happen. Part of me wants to try to do some double long runs on a weekend and see what sort of fitness I can get to by the end of the summer to run a 35 Mile Ultra other parts of me wants to keep its a bit more low key and just trainer for a marathon again then the sensible side of me says just keep doing what I am doing and see how long the streak lasts.

I hate it when people say “I can’t.” I call bullshit! 
You can do anything you put your mind to! 
It’s true!  Unless there is a medical reason for why you can’t do something, you absolutely can. 
Everyone is stronger than they think.  If you dedicate your time and effort towards your goal, you absolutely can achieve it!

Time for new shoes, methinks! I stuck with the Brooks Pure Flow 7. They work for me. Lightweight yet just enough support and stability. I do need to learn to change my shoes more often as I could definitely feel the cushion which clearly the previous pair lacked. I will say, however, that I don’t think you can get too many miles out of the Pure Flow. After 350 you have to start looking for another pair. Another shoe may give you 400-450 miles. Hopefully this will help my runners knee!

What do you wear to run in? What is your go-to kit? Leggings or Shorts? T Shirt or Singlet?

You will almost always catch me in shorts and t-shirt when running. I’ve tried to run in Speed Tights and found that they were so tight that it made my hips and knees hurt. I’ve tried many singlets or vests and I’ve never normally got on with them, simply because I have absolutely zero confidence in how my arms look, and yes I’m a male that is paranoid about armpit fat.

But I’ve been lucky enough to be #gifted this SAYSKY Classic Tiger Singlet in blue tiger camo. And to be fair it is only the second racing top I’ve ever liked, really light and breathable, which I definitely felt last night…so chilly haha. This will be my go to race top when the weather warms up, and maybe one day when I actually work on my arms and chest a bit more I might be wearing things like this a lot more often.

What do you wear to run in? What is your go-to kit? Leggings or Shorts? T Shirt or Singlet?

You will almost always catch me in shorts and t-shirt when running. I’ve tried to run in Speed Tights and found that they were so tight that it made my hips and knees hurt. I’ve tried many singlets or vests and I’ve never normally got on with them, simply because I have absolutely zero confidence in how my arms look, and yes I’m a male that is paranoid about armpit fat.

🙅🏼ESTIRAR, no nos cansaremos nunca de decir la importancia que tiene una musculatura bien elástica para prevenir lesiones.
💤 DESCANSO, forma parte del entrenamiento, si no llegaréis muy fatigados muscularmente y psicológicamente. Estos días los entrenamientos deberían bajar en cantidad de kilómetros.
🙌🏻 MASAJE DEPORTIVO, incluirlo como parte del entrenamiento es esencial para prevenir lesiones y correr más rápido. 4 días antes es perfecto.
🍏ALIMÉNTATE bien estos últimos días antes de la prueba, evita el alcohol e hidrátate bien.
🚫PROHIBIDO estrenar ropa o zapatillas el día de la prueba, si tienes calzado nuevo aún estás a tiempo de hacer una adaptación progresiva.
💥CALMA, a pesar de la ilusión y las ganas, es un circuito donde hay que guardar energía para los últimos 6-7 kilómetros donde ya se puede apretar al máximo corriendo.
☑️ DISFRUTA, la faena ya está hecha y el día de la competición toca divertirse con el buen ambiente, toda la gente que anima y sonreír, lo estás logrando!!!

Flow hat mich heute das Tempo und die Strecke bestimmen lassen. Die Luft war toll, frisch und angenehme 9,5°... die Beine wollten laufen...habe wenig auf die Uhr gesehn und meine Beine machen lassen. Versucht vor den Steigungen keine Panik zu haben. Heute was Interessantes über innere Bilder gelesen. Man nimmt das was man vor sich hat an, anstatt dagegen zu kämpfen oder gar Angst zu haben. Als inneres Bild vor Augen sah ich mich beim Zieleinlauf vom Wettkampf in Florida. Vor meinen Augen die Uhr, die meine Zielzeit anzeigt...und sie war für die 5k unter 30 Min 😬🤩
Gut, ein bisschen bin ich davon noch weg...aber ich habe das klare Ziel vor Augen, das ich das bis Mai schaffe🏃🏼‍♀️❤️🏃🏼‍♀️ Was hättet ihr als inneres Bild vor Augen? 😁

Flow has let me set the pace and the distance today. The air was great, fresh and pleasant 9.5 ° ... the legs wanted to run ... I did not look at the watch and had my legs done. Try not to panic before the climbs. Today something interesting about inner pictures read. You take what you have in front of you instead of fighting or even being afraid. As an inner picture in mind, I saw myself at the finish of the competition in Florida. In front of my eyes the clock that shows my target time ... and it was under 30 min for the 5k 😬🤩
Well, I'm a bit away from that ... but I have the clear goal in mind that I can do this until May. What would you have in mind as an inner image? 😁
