Humans 2484- Introducing Karen Watson
(Interviews by Jean King)
After working 21 years as a primary school teacher Karen and her partner Nick took a year off in 2012 to travel the world. Upon their return to Australia in 2013 they realised they wanted something different and quit their jobs in Melbourne to move to Kirra. Karen has worked as a travel consultant at Helloworld Travel, Main Street, Murwillumbah for the past 5 year and finally convinced Nick to move here in 2017. She is currently the store manager, and when she clocks off indulges her passions of traveling, reading and keeping fit.
Karen loves the diversity and friendliness of the 2484. Having lived in bigger cities, she finds it wonderful to walk down the street and know people by name. She loves the new M-ARTS precinct and is grateful to live in such a creative community.
In terms of what our town could do better Karen says it would be great to see more people supporting local businesses for every facet of their shopping instead of going to Tweed or purchasing online. Although she hears a lot of people talking about this, it doesn’t always translate into actions. Working in a small business, Karen is inspired when businesses support each other, and would love to see more of this happening locally. She also recognises the significant shortage of housing for families and people in need, and would like to see local solutions addressing this problem.
Her own contribution, apart from providing an exceptional travel service to our community, is bringing her voice to The Murwillumbah Business Chamber meetings. Karen attends local community events as often as possible and tries to shop locally, supporting the local farmers markets on a weekly basis. And for those, like her, who love to invigorate their lives by exploring new parts of the world, the travel agency holds a free community film night every year. Even if you’re not in a position to take off on a trip, it’s a great opportunity to start dreaming about it.
