Unlike a standard overhead press where you press the weight straight up in a vertical plain, the cage press requires you to actively press forwards against the rack as well as upwards 💡⁣

After delosding more than I foresaw, mainly because my body needed to recover much more than I anticipated, I'm back with a strength block.

It's the first time that I'm using knee sleeves, the first time in over a year using my belt and overall the first time that I've been squatting heavy in so much raw gear.

The reason why this changed is that by now I'm approaching powerlifting as a sport and want to get better at those lifts in a competitive way and not only to get stronger.

I did a double back squat at 132,5 kg with a RIR of 3. I guess it ended up more like a 2 as I put on my belt a little too tight.

Then I did 3x5 at 120 kg squats.

followed by 3x5 Spoto bench press at 60 kg. this was way too easy. I assume my bench got a lot stronger.

I finished with some assistance work.

I’ve posted this side delt pump fest before and it’s still the shit and will give you a massive pump. This was done after heavy barbell incline presses and single arm landmine presses.

This is what a nerd would call a ‘mechanical drop set’. They’re not magic for hypertrophy but they are super convenient and will pretty much tax the entire contractile range of motion of that given exercise.

A1. Cross cable Y-raise - overload the shortened position.
A2. Cross cable lateral raise - overload the mid range. For these, take a step in and lean your torso slightly back.
A3. Cross cable lateral raises. - overload the lengthened range. By this point I was spent just doing seizure reps in the bottom portion of the range to finish off whatever I had left.
A4. Scapular press - I don’t know if there’s an actual name for these but they suck. What I’m focusing on here is as much scapular moment as I can.

Repeat this sequence until you have to buy bigger shirts.

BREATHING during exercise goes beyong "inhale to lower, exhale to lift". _
This is a perfectly fine cue if you're doing a biceps curl, leg extension, or pec fly.  But when it comes to movements you can REALLY LOAD - the compound stuff like squats, deadlifts, strict presses, or leg press - you need to think a bit more about engagement and the health of your SPINE.

Breathing for big lifts shouldn't be about keeping your abs tight and your "belly button pulled into the spine". These are introductory cues that can lead you astray during heavily loaded lifts. If you're looking for the strongest, safest outcome, it's better to kill the attractive, flat stomach, and make your gut huge and full of air. This will come from breathing through the diaphragm, and increasing the intra-abdominal pressure. The added tension will bolster the spine and really help you through bottom end ranges of the heavy stuff.

One reason many serious lifters will train their big stuff with a belt on, is because it helps allow them to properly brace against it (and a reason, among others, that I like using belts for deadlifts these days). Some people are bionic unicorns who can lift in any form or fashion and never get hurt. But if you're more a part of the "normal" crowd who needs to play it safe when handling big weight, this cue should bring your game to the next level.

It isn't "wrong" to hold your breath - as long as you're doing so at the right TIME of your lift. Stay braced and tight through the "hard parts" and you won't regret it.

Shoulders are definitely my weakest body part and recently been trying to improve that. Definitely prefer Dumbbell shoulder press over the barbell but that’s personal preference. Spending Sunday doing what I love - playing around with Strongman implements 💪🏻 went to Iron Revolution (@ironrevolutiongym) for the final sess of the week to do some Yokes for speed (120kg for 40m sorta? I have no idea how long one length of the turf is but it looks about 15m), Axle Clean and Press cluster sets at 60kg and a medley of keg carry, farmers walk and stone squats
