Showin' off a green stack for St. Patrick's Day. ☘️
•
I won't be celebrating today because I'm thoroughly trying to enjoy my last day off for *at least* the next 12 days by trying to simultaneously do chores and be as lazy possible. We're reaching a point in the work calendar that calls for me putting in a lot of extra hours, so I'm just trying to revel in any down time I can find. I suspect the amount of books I get through for the next couple of months to slow down some, but I'm hoping I can find the time to stay on track! 💚

“The erotic has often been misnamed by men and used against women. It has been made into the confused, the trivial, the psychotic, the plasticized sensation. For this reason, we have often turned away from the exploration and consideration of the erotic as a source of power and information, confusing it with its opposite, the pornographic. But pornography is a direct denial of the power of the erotic, for it represents the suppression of true feeling. Pornography emphasizes sensation without feeling.
The erotic is a measure between the beginnings of our sense of self and the chaos of our strongest feelings. It is an internal sense of satisfaction to which, once we have experienced it, we know we can aspire. For having experienced the fullness of this depth of feeling and recognizing its power, in honor and self-respect we can require no less of ourselves.
It is never easy to demand the most from ourselves, from our lives, from our work. To encourage excellence is to go beyond the encouraged mediocrity of our society is to encourage excellence. But giving in to the fear of feeling and working to capacity is a luxury only the unintentional can afford, and the unintentional are those who do not wish to guide their own destinies.” .

“A few weeks ago, I celebrated the birth of Audre Lorde by returning to her seminal text, "Sister Outsider." A must read and an essential classic of the Black feminist canon. Two of my favorite essays are, “Uses of the Erotic: The Erotic as Power”: For the erotic is not a question only of what we do; it is a question of how acutely and fully we can feel in the doing. And “Transformation of Silence into Language and Action”: “I have come to believe over and over again that what is most important to me must be spoken, made verbal and shared, even at the risk of having it bruised or misunderstood.” So many more gems in this text to fortify your soul as we wage love on these political battlefields.” - @piperanderson⠀

Not really a ✨review✨ because such a thing wouldn't do this collection justice, so here are some thoughts/feelings on Sister Outsider.
•
I've been M.I.A. from my feed for a while, but it's because I've been focusing all of my attention on this beauty. I wanted to take my time with it and really let the words sink in. I've read and reread my highlighted passages, and intend to come back to this text time and time again. So much of the writing still rings true today in a way that still feels relevant and revolutionary. Which is both a bit alarming and validating, as Audre says, there is no new pain, and there are no new ideas. So here we are, at a time when her ideas need to be read just as much as they did when they were written. I'm a strong believer that sometimes books make their way to you when you need them, and this one definitely did.
•
I want to end on a quote, and it took me so long to decide on one, but I picked this one that feels particularly relevant to the bookstagram community. And particularly relevant to me, a white woman, reading, digesting, and wanting to talk about the texts of a radical black feminist.
•
"The literatures of all women of color recreate the textures of our lives, and many white women are heavily invested in ignoring the real differences. For as long as any difference between us means one of us must be inferior, then the recognition of any difference must be fraught with guilt. To allow women of color to step out of stereotypes is too guilt provoking, for it threatens the complacency of those women who view oppression only in terms of sex. Thus, in a patriarchal power system where whiteskin privilege is a major prop, the entrapment used to neutralize black women and white women are not the same."

BookPeople is a fantastic, big Austin bookstore with lots of corners to read in and wonderful staff selection shelves and recommendations. I (of course) bought books there—a signed copy of NIGHT MOVES by Jessica Hopper, plus SISTER OUTSIDE by Audre Lorde and THE GIRL IN THE FLAMMABLE SKIRTS by Aimee Bender.

“Now you have made loneliness holy and useful and no longer needed
now
your light shines brightly but I want you
to know
your darkness also
rich
and beyond fear”
This past weekend was the last session of “Your Silence Will Not Protect You” our monthly Audre Lorde Reading/Discussion Group, it was beautiful and bittersweet. Thank you so much to @wendyssubway for hosting these gatherings. I am grateful to the folks that came each month with open hearts and minds, ready and willing to dive into the work!! It has been an honor, a blessing and a deep challenge for me to lead these conversations on the poetry, essays and life of this amazing woman who defined herself as a Black, lesbian, mother, warrior poet. Her genius and humanity inspired each one of us in so many ways. Each session we read an excerpt of her work, or her poems, watched interviews and listened to readings. We talked in detail about how it connects to our own artistry, politics and identity, I would then offer writing prompts inspired by the work, which we shared with each other. The sharings were my favorite part because people got honest, brave and raw!! Also amazing and creative writing!! We closed each session with an affirmation. This gorgeous book stack represents our source material, her books ZAMI, SISTER OUTSIDER, THE CANCER JOURNALS, her poetry collection, and her biography WARRIOR POET by Alexis Deveaux.
For those interested in knowing more about our sessions I will be sharing the details and notes from each one on the Patreon for the library!! Link in bio!! Become a patron for as low as $2 a month and you will have it all, the readings, the questions, the prompts and the affirmations. If you’re into writing, poetry, Black Feminism, Audre Lorde, journaling and rituals of self reflection type exercises you will definitely dig it and find it worthy. 🖤💛🖤#audrelorde #audre #sisteroutsider #theblackunicorn #patreon #bookstagram #booklove #blacklibrary #writerswrite #blackwomanbibliophile #poetry #essays #womenshistorymonth #journaling #freeblackwomenslibrary

Sister Outsider by Audre Lorde was left at The Naam for a lucky #feminist reader to find on this International Women’s Day. 💜
This book was one of three books chosen by Emma Watson for her book club: @oursharedshelf for November/December 2018
💜
About the book: A collection of fifteen essays written between 1976 and 1984 gives clear voice to Audre Lorde's literary and philosophical personae. These essays explore and illuminate the roots of Lorde's intellectual development and her deep-seated and longstanding concerns about ways of increasing empowerment among minority women writers and the absolute necessity to explicate the concept of difference—difference according to sex, race, and economic status. The title Sister Outsider finds its source in her poetry collection The Black Unicorn (1978). These poems and the essays in Sister Outsider stress Lorde's oft-stated theme of continuity, particularly of the geographical and intellectual link between Dahomey, Africa, and her emerging self.

With all of the books in my to-read pile, I’ve taken inventory & moved these four up the list. I found this in a Free Library box on the roadside when I was running (there are 5 in the neighborhood next to my school!). This is probably one of my best finds, and I’ve been meaning to read Sister Outsider for awhile. It gave me a lot to think about, especially the Open Letter to Mary Daly. #Bookstagram #bookstagrammer #book #books #livre #libri #reading #toread #bookcover #beautifulbooks #igreads #bookish #readersofinstagram #bookphotography #bookphotos #booklove #bookcollector #bibliophile #bookblog #bookblogger #bookcommunity #audrelorde #sisteroutsider #littlefreelibrary

“For women, then, poetry is not a luxury. It is a vital necessity of our existence...Poetry is the way we help give name to the nameless so it can be thought...” “The white fathers told us: I think, therefore I am. The Black mother within each of us - the poet - whispers in our dreams: I feel, therefore I can be free. Poetry coins the language to express and charter this revolutionary demand, the implementation of that freedom.” This essay from Sister Outsider by the amazing “warrior poet” Audre Lorde is compelling, strong, brave and moving. I’m a sometimes poet and a woman trying to understand, honor, and implement intersectionality. This book is a step in that direction, a step into listening. Read it. #diversespines #diversereads #intersectionalfeminism #intersectionality #intersectionalfeminist #audrelorde #sisteroutsider #lotstolearn

Time for my February Reading Wrap-up. This month I finally got over my reading slump and that meant finishing some of the books I'd had going for the last couple of months.

✓An account of the decline of the great auk by one who saw it (Jessie Greengrass): a beautifully written short story collection about solitude and being lonely. 👍🏽👍🏽

#staffpicksunday is from Kirsten in Portland! If you’re trying to figure out what to read next by a kick-ass woman, look no further than “Sister Outsider” by Audre Lorde. This collection includes essays and speeches from Lorde that have shifted the paradigm for all that have read it. 🤔🧠🙌
.
.
.
Some of Kirsten’s favorites in the collection are “The Master’s Tools Will Never Dismantle the Master’s House,” and “The Uses of Anger.” But you should probably just read all of them...😍

February 29. Audre Lorde.
Undersong (1968). Zami: A New Spelling of My Name (1982). Sister Outsider (1984) "A self-described 'black, lesbian, mother, warrior, poet,' Audre Lorde dedicated both her life and her creative talent to confronting and addressing injustices of racism, sexism, classism and homophobia."- Poetry Foundation

Who better to intersect #blackhistorymonth with #womenshistorymonth than Audre Lorde? The essays in Sister Outsider (a friend has) taught me a lot about intersectionality when it comes to oppression. "Uses of the Erotic: The Erotic as Power" is transformative and an essay I want to read again.
I am grateful to Darnell L. Moore for mentioning Zami at his recent book talk for "No Ashes in the Fire," for I read it this winter and Audre Lorde's writing is so beautiful, vulnerable, painful, yet filled with so much love for the women in her life. My girlfriend has started reading Zami now as well. 💞

Black girl magic!

BOOK MAIL. I started Sister Outsider as a library book and quickly realized I needed my own copy. And I picked up this rec for Angry Black Girl from @reggiereads. The essay titles are everything I need right now. 👧🏽👩🏽

February is Black History Month and while celebrating black history is absolutely vital in every month, this February I’ve been focusing particular attention and energy into improving my allyship, honoring the innumerable black lives whose courage built the spaces I am privileged enough to occupy, and a continued commitment to making reparations in as many forms as possible while unpacking/unlearning the ways in which I perpetuate oppressive systems. Forever grateful for any/all recommendations of relevant books, music, movies, etc. that address racism from an intersectional standpoint, and forever recommending that everyone read “Sister Outsider” to absorb some of Audre Lorde’s unparalleled wisdom. Let’s make March Black History Month, too, and the rest of the year, and the rest of our lives .

When outlets fail to center Black people in conversations about Black experiences, they do everyone a disservice.⁣

You do not have to be me in order for us to fight alongside each other. I do not have to be you to recognize that our wars are the same. What we must do is commit ourselves to some future that can include each other and to work toward that future with the particular strengths of our individual identities. And in order for us to do this, we must allow each other our differences at the same time as we recognize our sameness.

“Helen made a remark that the workers rule the country, and her manner and response to that seemed to be one of disgust, or at least rather put-off. I think Helen felt that she was being discriminated against, or that she was at a disadvantage, because she was an ‘intellectual,’ a translator as well as an interpreter. Which struck me as an odd kind of snobbishness because Helen worked at least as hard, if not harder, than any waitress, running after me and living my life as well as hers. Because always, she stuck to me like white on rice.” -Trip to Russia, Audre Lorde

You guys. I went a little wild at @elliottbaybookco yesterday. I didn’t even make it that far into the stacks because every display seemed to whisper: Erin. You don’t need money. You only need this book. And these other five.
Some, like Sister Outsider and Silver Sparrow, I’ve been meaning to read for a while. Others, I didn’t know I needed until I touched them. In any case, I’m DEFINITELY not buying any more books until I read the ones I have* *exclusions and restrictions may apply
