I absolutely adore cookbooks that tell a story - I'm not even after recipes half the time, I just love reading passionate cooks who write well and tell a good culinary story. I've decided that I'm going to concentrate on developing a #multicultural collection of cookery books, to really develop an understanding of the importance of food and cooking around the world, and where possible, from an historical perspective. The most Michelle way to start is undoubtedly #saltandtime by @borsch_and_no_tears ... It's a cookbook that explores the culinary #history of #SovietRussia... My passions have combined and I AM IN NERD HEAVEN!

🇬🇧Exquisite interiors and facade, decorated with red granite, belong to the building constructed here, in the very beginning of Nevsky prospect, in 1911. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Funny fact: in 1934 an atelier was opened here, where a Soviet woman could order a tailored dress, made after patterns taken from French fashion magazines. You could order no more than 2 dresses at once! And this atelier was called «Death to husbands». I guess the reason is clear:) 👇(more information in the first comment)

As the Soviet Union continued to rise following the defeat of the White movement in the Russian Civil War years earlier: this collection of four images with the original on the top left depicts Nikolay Antipov, Joseph Stalin, Sergei Kirov and Nikolai Shvernik as they pose for a photograph taken in Leningrad in 1926. The other three photos gradually depicts Stalin's wrath: as two of the men with Stalin were airbrushed out over the years after they slowly fell out of his favor. Sergei Kirov, originally a close friend of Joseph Stalin and the First Secretary of the Azerbaijani Communist Party, was shot in the neck and assassinated under mysterious circumstances on December 1st 1934. Rumors persist that Stalin and elements of the Soviet NKVD may or may not have had a hand in the killing. Nikolay Antipov, a member of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of the Soviet Union, was expelled from the Communist Party and later executed by the NKVD on July 29th 1938 during the Great Purge. Nikolai Shvernik was the only one in these images who wasn't executed or made to suffer from some other sort of punishment, as he was only removed from the photo in the first place so the image of Stalin could be used for an autobiography in 1949. Ironically, Shvernik even managed to outlive Stalin by seventeen years.

We will be live streaming the entirety of Victoria Lomasko's lecture on 'The Last of the Soviet Artists: Who are They?' via our Facebook page this Friday at 7 p.m. PST. While this event is at capacity, we hope you can join us for the stream! Read on for more info:
•
The historic memory of the Soviet Empire, its art and its heroes, ends with the generation born in the mid-1970s. Educated by a generation of teachers who established themselves in the Soviet system, the last generation of Soviet artists process the complex histories of their country. The artist Victoria Lomasko will document and reflect on this ongoing dialogue by discussing how her generation uses Soviet themes, images, and style. This lecture is presented as part of Wende Conversations: A Discussion Series Supported by Susan Horowitz and Rick Feldman.

1913: When Hitler, Trotsky, Tito, Freud and Stalin all lived in the same place

A century ago, one section of Vienna played host to Adolf Hitler, Leon Trotsky, Joseph Tito, Sigmund Freud and Joseph Stalin.

In January 1913, a man whose passport bore the name Stavros Papadopoulos disembarked from the Krakow train at Vienna's North Terminal station.

Of dark complexion, he sported a large peasant's moustache and carried a very basic wooden suitcase. "I was sitting at the table," wrote the man he had come to meet, years later, "when the door opened with a knock and an unknown man entered. "He was short... thin... his greyish-brown skin covered in pockmarks... I saw nothing in his eyes that resembled friendliness." The writer of these lines was a dissident Russian intellectual, the editor of a radical newspaper called Pravda (Truth). His name was Leon Trotsky.

The man he described was not, in fact, Papadopoulos.

He had been born Iosif Vissarionovich Dzhugashvili, was known to his friends as Koba and is now remembered as Joseph Stalin.

Trotsky and Stalin were just two of a number of men who lived in central Vienna in 1913 and whose lives were destined to mould, indeed to shatter, much of the 20th century.

It was a disparate group. The two revolutionaries, Stalin and Trotsky, were on the run. Sigmund Freud was already well established.

The psychoanalyst, exalted by followers as the man who opened up the secrets of the mind, lived and practised on the city's Berggasse.

The young Josip Broz, later to find fame as Yugoslavia's leader Marshal Tito, worked at the Daimler automobile factory in Wiener Neustadt, a town south of Vienna, and sought employment, money and good times.

The 1945 wedding to the sea was directly preceded by the Battle of Kołobrzeg, a major victory by Soviet-allied Polish forces during the Pomeranian Offensive. The large Baltic city had been designated a stronghold by the Germans, being a key supply gateway to German forces across East Prussia & northern Poland. Up to 15,000 men were garrisoned there, bolstered by some 60 pieces of artillery, an armoured train, 18 tanks & dozens of other vehicles.
.
Kołobrzeg was initially attacked by Soviet forces on 4 March, without success. On 6 March the Soviet High Command decided to task the Polish First Army with taking the city, although the Poles’ first attack on 8 March was likewise repulsed. German forces had begun evacuating everyone in the city & were stubbornly holding on until this operation could be completed.
.
On 12 March a second assault was launched, which advanced at the cost of very heavy casualties. The Germans refused a proposal to surrender on 14 March, so the following day heavy fighting resumed. By this time the Germans had received reinforcements but proved unable to stop the continuing Polish assault, with the First Army capturing the barracks & railway station as well as Salt Island, a large marina.
.
By 16 March the Germans had concentrated all of their forces around the port, where valuable equipment & personnel were being hastily shipped off. Polish forces captured the port the following afternoon, but by then only 2,000 or so troops remained, the rest having managed to slip away alongside the vast majority of the city’s inhabitants as well as some 70,000 refugees from surrounding areas.
.
The Battle of Kołobrzeg was one of the most intense urban battles of WW2, with more than 80% of the city in ruins following the heavy fighting. The Polish victory cost the First Army 1,206 dead or missing plus 3,000 wounded. In an eastern emulation of the Polish Second Corps at Monte Cassino, the survivors would go on to break through the Germans’ redoubtable Pomeranian Wall in early 1945.

Sleeping Death

circa 1942: A German soldier prevents a comrade from falling asleep in a snow-covered Russian field, as it would mean certain death in these conditions.

Falling asleep during the severe russia winters on frontline of Stalingrad or Moscow meant certain painless death. Many German soldiers fell prey to this hypothermic condition . Many slept to death

While the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics continues to politically fragment and as more and more Soviet republics explore the possibility of declaring independence from Moscow's rule: this photograph taken in Moscow's famed Red Square on November 7th 1990 depicts Soviet Army military vehicles as they partake in the very last Soviet-era parade which commemorated the 1917 October Revolution. This was the first and last parade attended by Mikhail Gorbachev in his position as President of the Soviet Union, and just one hour before the parade began a gunman named Alexander Shmomov attempted to assassinate him with a rifle. President Gorbachev was completely unharmed, and the Soviet Union itself was formally dissolved by the Supreme Soviet just 414 days later.

There was a bakehouse in almost every single Gulag camp. Poor-quality bread was the most important food for prisoners. The bread was baked in iron moulds like this one, which we found during our expeditions. See more items like this in 3D visualization in our Gulag Online Museum.

New Feed Soviet Afgan War Collage 1979 - 1989

Date : December 24, 1979 – February 15, 1989

1st➡️6th : In 1979, however, the Soviet Army intervened in a civil war raging in Afghanistan. The Soviet Army came to back a Soviet-friendly communist government threatened by a multinational, mainly afghan, insurgent groups called the mujahideen. The insurgents received military training in neighboring Pakistan, China, and billions of dollars from the United States, Saudi Arabia, and other countries

Technically superior, the Soviets did not have enough troops to establish control over the countryside and to secure the border. This resulted from hesitancy in the Politburo, which allowed only a "limited contingent", averaging between 80,000 and 100,000 troops

Consequently, local insurgents could effectively employ hit-and-run tactics, using easy escape-routes and good supply-channels. This made the Soviet situation hopeless from the military point of view (short of using "scorched earth" tactics, which the Soviets did not practise except in World War II in their own territory). The understanding of this made the war highly unpopular within the Army

With the coming of glasnost, Soviet media started to report heavy losses, which made the war very unpopular in the USSR in general, even though actual losses remained modest, averaging 1670 per year. The war also became a sensitive issue internationally, which finally led General Secretary Mikhail Gorbachevto withdraw the Soviet forces from Afghanistan. The "Afghan Syndrome" suffered by the Army parallels the American Vietnam Syndrome trauma over their own unsuccessful war in Vietnam

Tactically, both sides concentrated on attacking supply lines, but Afghan mujahideen were well dug-in with tunnels and defensive positions, holding out against artillery and air attacks

The decade long war resulted in millions of Afghans fleeing their country, mostly to Pakistan and Iran. At least half a million Afghan civilians were killed in addition to the rebels in the war

7th➡️10th : Soviet Air Forces (Военно-воздушные силы (VVS), literally "Military Air Forces") was the official designation of one of the air Forces of the Soviet Union

US Infantry attend a Mass in the bombed ruins of the Cologne Cathedral. March 1945

The Allies bombed Cologne (the Germans call it Köln) 262 times, and intensely from October 1942 until March 1945. This bombing included "Operation Millennium" which was the first 1,000 bomber raid, taking place on 30/31 May 1942 using 1,047 aircraft and over 3 million kg of ordnance. By October 1944 the city of Cologne was in ruins and the population had been reduced by 95%. However, the spires of the bombed cathedral still rose above the rubble.

The cathedral suffered fourteen hits by aerial bombs during World War II. Badly damaged, it nevertheless remained standing in an otherwise completely flattened city. The twin spires were an easily recognizable navigational landmark for Allied aircraft bombing.

On March 6, 1945, an area West of the cathedral (Marzellenstrasse/Trankgasse) was the site of intense tank combat between American tanks of the 3rd Armored Division and a Panther Ausf. A of Panzer brigade 106 Feldherrnhalle. The Panther successfully knocked out a Sherman killing three men before it was destroyed by a T26E3 Pershing hours later. Footage of that battle survives. The destroyed Panther was later put on display at the base of the cathedral for the remainder of the war in Europe.

The Americans captured Cologne on March 6th, 1945.
Repairs on the Kölner Dom were completed in 1956.

🇷🇺Yuri Gagarin🇷🇺 was born on March 9, 1934 in the village of Klushino, near Gzhatsk (renamed 'Gagarin' after his death) in the Soviet Union. His father was a carpenter, his mother a milkmaid and Yuri grew up on a collective farm, alongside an older brother, sister and younger brother.

Like millions of Soviet citizens, the Gagarin family suffered during Nazi occupation in World War II. Klushino was occupied in November 1941 during the German advance on Moscow, and an officer took over the Gagarin residence. The family was allowed to build a mud hut, approximately 3x3 metres (10x10 ft) inside, on the land behind their house, where they spent a year and 9 months until the end of the occupation. His two older siblings were deported by the Germans to Poland for slave labour in 1943, and did not return until after the war. In 1946, the family moved to Gzhatsk, where Gagarin continued his secondary education.

As a young man, Gagarin was an avid sportsman, playing hockey frequently and being a big basketball fan.
In 1950, at age 16, Gagarin started an apprenticeship as a foundryman. He worked at a steel plant in Moscow and graduated in 1951. He then went to Sarstov Industrial School, and while there he learned to be a pilot at first in a biplane and later in a Yak-18 trainer. He also earned extra money as a part-time dock labourer on the Volga River.

After graduating technical school in 1955, Gagarin was drafted into the Red Air Force. He was assigned to a hangar in Murmansk, near the Norwegian border, where terrible Arctic weather made flying risky. He became a Lieutenant in the Soviet Air Forces in 1957; and in 1959 he received the rank of Senior Lieutenant.

While he was in the military, he met Valentina Ivanovna Goryacheva, a medical technician, and they were married in 1957. They had 2 daughters together, both of whom are still alive. [continued in the comments]

Constantin (second from the left in the second photo), his three brothers and his mother were deported to #Siberia on July 6, 1949 – woken up around 4 a.m. and told to pack their things. They left in the summer clothes they were wearing, from what he remembers, only packing some corn flour and wheat flour for the trip. His mother took the family sewing machine.

The train ride to the Irkutsk region of Siberia took 21 days, with about 100 to 120 people crammed in each train wagon. Once at their destination, they spent the first couple of nights in tents. Eventually, people started building cottages.

The train ride to the Irkutsk region of Siberia took 21 days, with about 100 to 120 people crammed in each train wagon. Once at their destination, they spent the first couple of nights in tents. Eventually, people started building cottages.

The "Night Witches" (the 588th Night Bomber Regiment) were some of the coolest people I learned about as a history undergrad. They were an all female aviation regiment of the Soviet Air Forces who flew over 23,000 sorties and dropped over 3,000 tons of bombs on the Germans. 32 of its members died during the war in service of their country. Because of the weight of the bombs and their low altitude, they carried no parachutes. They also did supply drops of food and ammunition to the Soviet forces. Most people I know have never heard of them. Happy #internationalwomensday !! #nightwitches #soviethistory #wwii #womenshistory

March 8—International Women’s Day—was originally a Soviet holiday. It started in 1917 after Soviet women gained the right to vote. It mostly celebrated in the communist world until it was adopted by the United Nations in 1975.⠀

Samovar memories! Eng👇

A nice memory of a journalist from the Village come along to one of the early classes held at my place in Krylatskoye.
We made pirozhki and cranberry mors and talked about Russia, life and just about everything else 😄

We still hold some classes at an apartment, introducing people to Soviet cooking & history

Each person who was deported by the #Soviet secret police known as the NKVD (a precursor to the KGB) likely has a file somewhere that probably begins like this one: “MATTER No…” In it there is an official record of arrest, vital statistics, a few handwritten statements and other official-looking forms. I don’t know the rules in other post-Soviet countries, but in #Moldova you can go to the state archives in Chisinau and review your own file or your immediate family’s #file – if you can confirm your identity.
.
.
Why were people arrested and deported, you ask? It depended on their occupation, political leaning, whether or not they were considered kulaks (wealthy peasants), and whether or not they opposed collectivization.

Ever heard of Project 80 and the Soviet floating hydrofoil tanks?

🇬🇧Matvey Shaposhnikov, a military commander,Lieutenant General and Hero of the Soviet Union. In 1967, he was expelled from the Communist Party and the KGB of Rostov opened a case on him for him allegedly being anti-Soviet but it was later dismissed due to his work as a front line general. He was reinstated in the Communist Party in 1988 and was also rehabilitated, in 1994 he sadly died and was buried in Rostov Cemetery.

Soviet soldiers with German Nebelwerfer.

The 15 cm Nebelwerfer 41 (15 cm NbW 41)was a German multiple rocket launcher used in the Second World War. It served with units of the Nebeltruppen, German Chemical Corps units that had the responsibility for poison gas and smoke weapons that were also used to deliver high-explosives during the war. The name Nebelwerfer is best translated as "smoke mortar".
Allied troops nicknamed it Screaming Mimiand Moaning Minnie due to its distinctive sound.

The Berlin Airlift - After a Soviet ground blockade on trade and travel from Allied controlled Berlin to the rest of Europe was put in place, the Western Powers decided to use C-47 Aircraft to deliver supplies to West Berlin. This alone most likely saved thousands maybe millions of lives as the Soviets were powerless to stop it.
