Yevlax Jewish cemetery... a neglected cemetery in a provincial area of central Western Azerbaijan. After WWII, Jews left the economically collapsing center of Shirvan Jewish life known as Vartashen (now Oghuz). Yevlax is an economic powerhouse agriculturally and there are many crumbling factories in the area as well that signify the economic prominence of this region especially in Soviet times. The Jews who lived here were totally secular and so built no synagogues and the Soviets required the cemetery to be located outside the city. The last Jews left here already over a decade ago and the cemetery is neglected except for a plot maintained by a family that moved to Moscow. •

SOVIET BETRAYAL: PART 1
.
As if the Katyń massacre wasn’t grotesque enough, the way the Soviets treated the Home Army – an official army of what was now one of their allies, & one of the most heroic fighting forces of WW2 – beggars belief. Anna Applebaum does a good job of bringing to light this disgraceful episode of history in her book ‘Iron Curtain: The Crushing of Eastern Europe’, which makes clear that while eastern Europe & particularly Poland was, by 1945, horrifically battered & bloodied, it was by no means a wasteland awaiting liberation & rebuilding under Soviet auspices. It was still very much alive, but betrayed, battered & bloodied further by its new occupiers from the east:
.
‘The attack on the Home Army was supplemented with violence directed at anyone who might be sympathetic to the Home Army’s plight, including family members. In total, the NKVD arrested some 35,000 to 45,000 people in the former eastern territories of Poland between 1944 and 1947.
.
‘As they moved into territory that even the USSR recognized as Polish, Soviet commanders did not become any less wary of the Home Army or any less suspicious of its leaders. On the contrary, as they moved deeper into Poland, the Russians became crueller, more decisive, and more efficient. By the time they reached Poznan in western Poland, they needed only a week to arrest dozens of Home Army members, incarcerate them, and subject them to brutal interrogation and torture. Following that, the NKVD conducted group executions of thousands of people in the forests outside the city. At the same time, the Home Army stopped treating the advancing Red Army as a potential ally, and Home Army partisans stopped identifying themselves to the new invaders. Some dropped their arms & melted into the civilian population. Others stayed in the forest & hunkered down to see what would happen next.’
.
This is why, as per the clip I shared a while ago commemorating the Yalta Agreement of 1944, the Poles do not consider the war to have finished in 1945. As Paweł Ukielski, Deputy Director of the Warsaw Uprising Museum, put it: ‘One occupation was just exchanged for another.’

This poster from 1950s Yugoslavia was originally meant to oppose Stalin’s interpretation of what communism really is. Accidentally, it effectively illustrates the proverb, 'A tree is known by its fruits' - if the fruits of communist ideology are 100 million dead, there's something wrong with the ideology. #communism #soviethistory #Atreeisknownbyitsfruits #ideology #marxism #patarei #patareivangla #patareiprison #darktourism #stalin #marx

Since we appeared, the moon has stayed with us. Later, as moon was too mysterious, people began awing the moon.

A long period time later, people were more reasonable. We started to study the night candlelight. We hope we could walk in moon. But finally it became an unachievable dream.

Until 1970s, Americans launched a rocket that brought a big dream of human beings to the moon. Our dream became able. When Armstrong was stepping on moon, he said that: “ That's one small step for a man, one giant leap for mankind. ”

Before Neil Armstrong, the United States and the Soviet Union and the whole world used too much money and many people resources to find the universe's mysteries. These actions may come from the space race and dignity of a great power, but we need to know if they haven't done anything about that, Armstrong must not step on the bright stone.

I think if Neil Armstrong still alive, he may feel excited that NASA restarted a plan which going to the moon and building a base, also will have the new goal~Mars.

Previously stepping on moon was the unachievable dream, but nowadays, we are talking about stepping on Mars. The world is change. But we will not forget moon is our neighborhood, our dream.

>>>swipe for English version>>> [tratto da "Lettere di condannati a morte della Resistenza Europea, Malvezzi, P. e Pirelli G. In august 2016 we documented an abandoned camp in eastearn Siberia in so-called Marble Gorge in Kodar Mountains. The uranium for the first Soviet atomic bombs was mined there by Gulag prisoners. The author of archaelogic research Lukas Holata @lholata will present results of the expedition at the Department of Archeology at the University of South Bohemia in Ceske Budejovice on Wednesday, May 22. Everybody is welcome!

[Kresy – Part 2]
.
‘They knocked on the door & said: “Get ready to leave in two hours’ time & leave everything… Siberia was a hell, it was a hell. I didn't think we would survive. In front of me, all the friends of my age were just dying, dying like flies.’
.
In 1939, the centuries-old idyll of the Kresy tumbled into a Nazi-Soviet hell. ‘The Kresy was the epicentre of the battle between the two giants,’ writes Irene Tomaszewski, ‘wreaking unprecedented destruction on the people, the land, and yes, the great forest. The savagery of the onslaught was driven by ideologies dedicated to the eradication of all cultures in these lands to be replaced by their own. In the end, they failed, but not before committing crimes of unparalleled magnitude & irreversibly altering the ethnic composition of the population. The Polish Jewish nation was all but destroyed, millions of Poles, Ukrainians & Byelorussians were killed, millions more deported. The material losses were staggering, the cultural losses heartbreaking.’
.
Another account reads, ‘They came with previously-prepared lists & ordered that all Kresy Polish military residents, police, civil servants, civilian farmer settlers & well-to-do land-owning peasants (Kulaks) have their property appropriated & their bank accounts frozen. Homes, businesses & farms were ransacked, personal property destroyed & owners imprisoned.
.
‘The deportees were forced to endure long train journeys, sometimes up to several weeks, under brutal conditions in appallingly overcrowded & unhygienic cattle trucks. They were kept locked in, with only a tiny grated window at the top so it was dark & stuffy. There was a stove for heating food, & for occasionally boiling snow to wash themselves, & a hole in the floor as a toilet…
.
‘Many died, especially small children & the elderly. Their bodies were just thrown out & left in the snow.’
.
Altogether, between 1,045,000 & 1,989,000 Kresy inhabitants are estimated to have met this fate. No wonder, then, that British historian Timothy Snyder concludes, ‘Stalin’s terror was on a far greater scale than Hitler’s; it was also incomparably more lethal’.

A toast to our current interview! It's the in-depth, human tale of the 20th Century's landmark disaster by Adam Higginbotham, author of "Midnight in Chernobyl: The Untold Story of the World's Greatest Nuclear Disaster." This is not a book cranked out overnight, dear listeners. Adam worked over 10 years to interview survivors, and to dig into the stories buried beyond the rote recollections they'd told a thousand times before. The result is a never-before-seen view of the Era of Stagnation, and the Union of Soviet Socialist Republic's good-on-paper, lousy-in-practice system.
...
I had to have a think for a background for this toast, and then I recalled some old Soviet-era brochures one of my brothers-in-law had sent me. He majored in Eastern Bloc studies, and arrived in Moscow just before the Revolution. He toured the country, and by the time he returned, the Russian flag was flying over the Kremlin in place of the hammer and sickle, a hated symbol of oppression. This is why you need a good guidance counselor, kids!

In the neighborhood Ortachala in Tbilisi stands the building Palace of Rituals tall and proudly.
As taken out of a science-fiction movie, it was built in 1985 as a wedding venue, designed by Georgian architect Victor Jorbenadze.
In the Soviet Union it was not exactly illegal to make buildings of worship, but for some reason that never happened. As a funny person I know states “you could make plans of a church, but only if you had a very strong desire to be persecuted by the KGB and work for a few years in labour camps in Siberia”. The building is remarkable for its bold resemblance of a church - in addition to that the floor plan is based on the anatomical cross-section of a female abdomen, and the facade speaks for itself.

Started a new book today after finishing 2312 on Friday. Chernobyl 01:23:40 by Andrew Leatherbarrow. Wasn't my first choice to read about Chernobyl in tandem with watching the new TV series but the book I wanted to read isn't included as part of the free Kindle Unlimited subscription I won, so I chose this as a close second. I love the stark honesty at the start of the book about Andrew not being a writer and this being a passion project more than anything (I can relate to that 😅) but so far it's been good and I already learnt more about Nuclear power than I knew on Sunday!

U-2 or Po-2. Built in 1927 by Nikolai Polikarov it was a light aircraft with no armour. The U-2 was used for a variety of roles such as training and transport. Perhaps it's most famous role was as a night bomber. They dropped around 3 million bombs at night.
It is perhaps most famous as the plane used by the all female 46th Guards Night Bomber Air Regiment or the 'Night Witches'. If a German pilot shot them down then he got the Iron Cross.
After the death of it's designer, the plane became the PO-2.

Monument to two Kazakh women who died in battle in World War II: Manshuk Mametova (R) and Aliya Moldagulova (L)❤❤❤
.
Both were posthumously given the highest award in the USSR: Hero of the Soviet Union
.
Mametova refused to retreat from a machine gun post. Remaining alone, she killed at least 70 enemy combatants before she herself was killed
.
Moldagulova was a sniper who had killed 32 enemy combatants by the time she turned 18. She led her battalion after their commander disappeared
.
I noticed that this monument uses only their first names, while monuments to male heros in the nearby Park 28 Panfilovtsev are listed with their full names

I really want to read more non fiction this year, and this is the author I'm interested to read the most. I love the history of the 20th century and the Soviet history in specific. 🌟
This incident shaped the nuclear era and shaped the way this type of energy is perceived in our days. I started to watch the new HBO show about chernobyl, and so far I really recommend it. 📖
I am also interested in reading more nobel prize winners! I'm sure this book will have a big impact on me. 🗯️ 🌹
