Day 52 of the 365 Day Nature Reset!
Spend #20minutesoutside everyday...intentionally🌲
One of my favourite places to work is in University libraries.
There is something about the stacks of books, buzzing cafe and focused students that inspires me.
Lately I have noticed that students spend 8+ hours a day sitting in the same spot, a row of beverages (hot/cold/energy) in front of them, headphones, textbooks and more piled up.
I do not remember committing this much time to a chair anywhere. I start to get squirmish after 2 hours! That's my max. before I have to move my body and take a mental break.
There seems to be so much pressure these days to perform at unheard of levels.
Mental illness is an epidemic on post-secondary campuses everywhere!
How can we encourage our youth to take care of their emotional selves as much as their mental selves?
When teaching, I find myself taking the students outside if there is daylight. I immediately open the frequently closed blinds from the class before. I encourage time outside to help with memory function. We need more.
After working today for some time on a beautiful campus in a beautiful city, the sun outside the window called out and I listened!
I came back to my spot in the library those around me still there. I put my little spruce bough and birch bark on the table, looked up, smiled with red cheeks and sighed "that was worth it!". #womenhikewild
