This is a huge big mistake that a lot of people are making after training that often causes digestive issues. If you still eat immediately after you work out then you have to stop if you want to help prevent any problems with digestion. .
Heres Why... When we train as I’ve discussed before we enter into the sympathetic state of the autonomic nervous system ie a stressed state.
This is only one of the 2 times per day when you want to be in this state however when we are in the sympathetic branch it turns down 3 key systems in the body - the digestive system, the reproductive system and the immune system. .
These can usually kick back in very quickly post workout but only if you are not constantly stressed. However, the issue is, having a big protein/carb meal within the first hour after training is not ideal. Remember, we have just turned down the digestive system when training.
This is why, protein powder and fast acting carbs are a superior choice not due to them being more optimal for muscle, but rather as they are metabolized instantly in the bloodstream, we now aid the digestive system from having to process a meal whilst being turned down. If you want a real meal, wait 60-90 minutes.
Also, be sure to promote a parasympathetic state post workout ASAP which will bring the heart rate down help turn up Your digestive system before you eat. The best way to do that is by using deep nasal breathing techniques or guided meditation. Headspace is your best bet for that. .
