The word Nescio means “I don’t know” in Latin… Dutch writer Jan Hendrik Frederik Grönloh used this word as his pen name and it reflects totally his personality.
He was born in Amsterdam and become one of the most prominent Dutch novelist (under the cover of the pseudonym Nescio), and at the same time he was a highly successful businessman and director of a trading company.
All his stories bear witness to the conflict between his career and his ideals and that is the main reason he started writing under the cover of a pseudonym.
He used to make long solitary walks around Amsterdam that he recounted in his work. Specifically at his book “Amsterdam Stories” he celebrates the Amsterdam landscape and make the readers to have a fiction long walk, crossing canals, sitting by lakes, ponds and rivers, contemplating about the important things in life.
No one has written with such clarity about the radiating canals of Amsterdam and the cloud-swept landscape of the Netherlands. And that is the reason why there is a bridge which spans the Amsterdam–Rhine Canal which was named after his pseudonym... Nescio Bridge!
