I'm worried. I'm worried about how I like lots of others use empowering quotes and bumper stickers type of life advice that is making us believe we are empowering ourselves while we actually have just been procrastinating.
I am totally guilty of this.
I feel I've been conned into thinking and believing I am activist about my life, mental health, physical health, sexuality, the world, the planet, our children, the animals the list goes on.
But what good is just thinking your an activist, what good is just thinking about how much you care? What good is just having your thoughts echoed in empowerment phrases and stickers?
I decided to stop procrastination and when I left my front door I was going to actively reach out to where I could and try to empower myself or others.
I popped into a Cafe and a mum sat on her own with her 3 children. The children were so beautiful to each other and mum while she queued and ferried stuff to and from the table and they helped her. No screaming no squabbles no tears.
It stood out to me because as a mum of an autistic daughter this would never be this straightforward so I decided to empower that mum she was doing great.
It felt awkward, it felt a bit embarrassing and a bit clumsy but once I finished my tea I went to her table and just said "excuse me". She turned and I told her that her children had been fantastic not because I have Victorian morals (kids should be seen and not heard) but because I saw it for the lovely scenario it was and one I would probably not encounter with my own daughter.
She was surprised and thanked me, and became a little apologetic that tommorow maybe a completely different story when they don't behave. That was irrelevant today was good and I wanted her to know so. To empower her. In real. Life. Not just a bumper sticker talking of how to empower women and mothers.
I felt a little emosh after but really glad I did it.
Let's get involved. Let's stop procrastination over social media because it's fooling us we're doing something in our minds when we may not be.
