The hardest place for me to find balance when I started yoga? The space between effort and ease.
For the seven years I’ve practiced yoga, I’ve been working on recovering from being a perfectionist, people-pleaser, and body-shamer. I was extreme at almost everything I did, and it didn’t land me anywhere but hurt; physically from pushing myself beyond limits, and emotionally from trying to please and win over everyone.
Slowly over the years of yoga practice, the balance of effort and ease started to appear. I could stay focused and relaxed throughout an entire class. I could use exhales to release tension, and wouldn’t get mad when I’d fall out of a posture, instead I would giggle. And the same was true off the mat, I was trying new things because I wasn’t so afraid to fail, I was starting to laugh at myself a little more, and using my voice despite what others might think. Life feels a little lighter, and so my yoga practice. Thank you, yoga, for a giant dose of surrender and ease to balance things out for me.
If you’re out there struggling to find that balance, I feel you. Do your practice. Be a work in progress, because perfection is only a state of mind. ❤️ .
